Consider this your trigger warning.
The J-Gate is literally just an old version of an automatic with flappy paddles. It downshifts and holds gears exactly like any automatic with a manual mode, only it’s tied to a ZF transmission that wants to kill itself and it feels better because it’s mechanical. Leave J-Gates alone!

J-Gate is the worst scandal the automotive world has ever seen

Also, that screw looking thing to the left of Park is not an exposed fastener . It’s a manual release so you can shift the car into Neutral when it breaks down, because Jag.

My S-Type loaner had that. Not as bad as the old Mercedes-style squiggly pattern shifter that many cars had for a while, but still dumb.

I’m convinced that VW would never have tried to cheat on emissions if they didn’t think that they could hide behind the J-Gate scandal

How did you like the S-Type? I’m beginning to accept that it’s way easier for me to find a cheap 4.0 or 4.2 S-Type that it’ll be to find a XK8 coupe that isn’t priced multiples of Bluebook and doesn’t have an aftermarket leaper drilled into the hood.

an aftermarket leaper drilled into the hood
Wait, what? Is this really a thing?

In theory, most of the usage is downshifting from OD. I’ve only once tried running through the gears from a standstill. It resulted in a transmission fault that put the car in limp home mode before it shifted out of first, so I didn’t try that again (in classic Jaguar style, the solution was to pull to the side and turn the car off and on again until it went away).

It was comfy enough and I liked feeling snooty driving it, but it felt very poorly made and wasn’t great to drive. I probably wouldn’t ever buy one.

Sadly, yes. I haven’t looked recently, but last time I looked, something like 5 out of 15 XK8s in a 100 mile radius on CarGurus had an aftermarket leaper. There were apparently a lot of people in the early 2000s who did not understand that Jaguar coupes never have hood ornaments.

Probably true. But at least there are apparently a lot of shared parts with the Lincoln LS.

Anyone who doesn’t understand a Jaguar shouldn’t be allowed to own one.
I realize that what I just wrote flies in the face of the modern strategy of chasing market share.

KBB puts them around $6k for a good example with 100,000 miles, but I don’t think I’ve seen anything past the trouble years (‘97-’00), for less than $10-15k around me. I’ve seen XKRs priced around $20k, which is nuts because that’s last gen XK money.

Really? That would be amazing, but I doubt I’d find one anyway. Even a nationwide search usually only brings up a handful for sale at any given time.

Yeah...I’m just getting past the honeymoon phase with my Mom’s new S-Type R and I’m realizing how absolutely appalling the interior is compared to the Vanden Plas which my dad is still stupidly trying to sell now. It is a really unpleasant place to be. The dark poplar wood is ugly as hell, and literally the only real leather is on the seats and wheel, whereas in a Vanden Plas everything is real leather inside. The S-Type blows, 400hp V8 notwithstanding.

I made a post in my formative years on Opposite asking why people basically ignored what seemed to be an E39 M5 competitor:

Then I drove one and it became painfully obvious.

No. The J gate is bad and the transmission it’s bolted to is bad too. I still would do dark things for an XJR

For what it’s worth, the transmission in the XJRs is different and apparently much more reliable.

Back of the engine? That’s not pentosin, there’s no way for it to find its way back that far. You’ve probably got a failed rear main seal like I do.

No, there’s a few high pressure lines back there. My mechanic pointed out one that looked like it could go at some point.

Lines aren’t bad either though. I had my primaries done with the pump. I just don’t understand how every part in your system is dissolving at less than 100k miles.

I’m not sure either lol. I won’t sell it but it does get annoying. It might also be overflow from the windshield washer tank mixing with a bit of oil. It’s weird, because it’s not a puddle, just a bit of a slick. And it hasn’t been getting bigger. It just appeared one night.
